Players should play in designated division according to birthdate or SVU also allows players to play with their grade peers. A grace period of 60 days will be allowed for players born between August 1 and September 30 in order to have the option to play-up with school peers. In some cases, the player’s birth date puts them on a team that is younger than the team for their grade level. These players may select the age division that matches their grade level without a petition to play up, or may choose to select the age division in their true age group. Players may not play down an age group for any reason. On a case-by-case basis, with the exception of the grace period, players may play up an age group, but ONLY at the VP, Recreational League's discretion.

*There will be at least 2 age groups for teenagers. Probably a U14 & U18, but depending on registration numbers it might be U13, U15, & U18, or maybe U13 & U17. If the resulting age groups are not acceptable, the leagues policy is full refund (minus the blue sombrero fee of $4); however, cancellation must be done prior to the first game.

AGC Responsibilities

Age Group Coordinator Responsibilities

Each division is assigned an Age Group Coordinator (AGC) to coordinate coaches, teams, schedules, etc. for each respective division.

Coaches

Based on current and expected registration numbers, the AGC should recruit coaches and assistant coaches for their respective division. A Head Coach and an Assistant Coach should be recruited for each team so that the coaching bench is at least two deep at all times (games and practices). The number of coaches recruited is based on the targeted number of players per team for the respective age division (i.e. U10 – 80 players registered, ideal number of players per team is 10 – AGC should try to recruit a head coach and an assistant coach for 8 teams). Recruiting can include prior year coaches, checking on Blue Sombrero for volunteer coaches or requesting emails to be sent out to league parents. Coaches should select practice day and time to help to avoid any player practice conflict time when assigning players. The AGC or coaches can contact the Field Coordinator to schedule practice times for their division/team.

The AGC should inform the coaches of expected behavior, rules, key dates, and field locations. Coaches should be encouraged to take advantage of “coaches training” offered through SVU. The AGC should provide coaches with information for access to equipment (to be provided by Equipment Coordinator) and information on to how to access team rosters and schedules on the website. Coaches should either print and distribute to team players or instruct them how to access the same information on the website. Coaches will select practice field and schedule by e-mailing the Field Coordinator.

Age Group Registrations / Player Assignment

The AGC should review all registrations for the assigned age group on the registration website. The AGC should acquire any player rankings from the previous year’s AGC. The AGC can assign players to teams or call a meeting of the respective division coaches and do a round robin draft. The ultimate goal of team creation is assign players to teams that enable all teams to be fair and competitive. The following factors should be taken into consideration when assigning players to teams:  age, years of experience, prior year player ranking, etc. When possible, siblings (assuming they're in the same age group) should be assigned to the same team unless otherwise stated and car pool requests should be considered. Based on the number of players in a division, determine how many teams will be targeted.

Team Assignment

Once player / team assignments are complete, they should be posted and emailed from the registration website.

Schedules can be created by each AGC or by a League Scheduler. Once schedules are complete, they should be posted and emailed.

The AGC should print a Participant Reports for any player showing a medical condition or allergy.

During Season

With the approval of the Vice President of Rec, any additional players added once the season has started, should be assigned to a team as soon as possible.

Resolve general issues in your age group as they arise.

End of Season

The AGC should complete the following for the end of each season:

  • Remind coaches to turn in equipment to the Equipment Coordinator or to the Snack Shack.
  • Poll, organize and distribute to appropriate AGC for the next year:
    • player ratings from coaches,
    • suggestions for improvement,
    • coaching intent for following year

At the end of the Spring season, all AGCs should collectively coordinate the end-of-year Soccer Fest at Smithland Field.
