Fall 2008

The SVU Board has made the decision to temporarily disengage from the Recreational All-Star program. Once we have volunteers to administer the program, the program will be reconsidered.

Spring 2008 All-Star Teams

Congratulations to the following teams for playing hard and making HSA proud. Overall, HSA teams took one 1st Place trophy, a 2nd place trophy and two third-place finishes in their respective brackets.

Girl's U10 Heat All-Star Team
The Girl’s U10 All-Stars finished 1st in their bracket at the 2008 FPYC Father’s Day Tournament in Northern VA. The heat had a record of 3-0-1 and held their opponents scoreless in all 4 games.  On Saturday, the Heat competed against Loudon Youth Soccer Association (0-0) tie and it was a very hard fought battle by both teams.  Due to inclement weather Saturday afternoon, the Heat only played a 30 minute game defeating Prince William (1-0).  On Sunday, the Heat knew they had their work cut out for them and accepted the challenge and defeated Southwestern Youth Association (3-0) and Burke Athletic Club (3-0).  Harrisonburg’s defense was incredible to hold every team scoreless and the offense worked together as a team to get the job done!

Boy's U10 Heat All-Star Team
The Boy's U-10 All-Star Team competed in the 2008 FPYC Father’s Day Tournament in Northern VA.  They finished 3rd in their bracket. On Saturday the Heat faced Southwestern (SYA), who turned out to be the #1 team. The Heat scored early in the 2nd half to tie up the game, but late in the game SYA netted the go ahead goal. The Heat made an offensive push to tie it up. Unfortunately, giving up a game-clinching goal to SYA instead. Due to inclement weather Saturday afternoon, the Heat played a shortened, but evenly matched game, defeating Chantilly 1-0 on a nice shot off the cross bar. Sunday morning the Heat played their best game of the tournament against Prince William (PWSI), who had earlier tied SYA 2-2. It was an exciting game to watch with both squads playing well. In the end. PWSI converted on two of their opportunities and HSA did not. The Sunday afternoon game would decide 3rd place in the tournament and the Heat was up for the challenge. They again played extremely well as a team netting two goals, while only giving up one late goal to defeat Springfield for 3rd place.      "Flame on Heat!!!"

The Heat then went on to play Fairfax Police Youth Club (2-4). On Sunday, the Heat came out strong and defeated Soccer on the Hill (3-0) and finished the tournament playing Springfield Youth Club (0-4) . Boy's U11 Heat All-Star Team
The Boy’s U11 All-Star Team started the tournament on Saturday with two strong performances winning the first game against Vienna Youth Blue 3-0 and the second game against Soccer on the Hill 12-0.  The first game on Sunday was against a stronger defensive team but with good team work, the Heat came away with a  1-0 win against Springfield and South County Youth Club. This win put the Heat in the championship game with 3 wins and zero goals allowed.  The championship game with Annandale Boy’s and Girl’s Youth Club was well played by both teams, but late in the game Annandale scored the only goal of the game. Congratulations to the U11 boys team that played well together as a team, played with good sportsmanship, and came home with finalists trophies.

All-Star Program

All-Stars

Towards the end of the Recreational Season each Fall and Spring, four All-Star teams will be selected to represent Harrisonburg in an All-Star tournament. Two boy’s team and two girl’s teams for age groups 10 and 11 (U10, GU10, U11, GU11). The All-Stars will travel as the Harrisonburg Heat and compete in one tournament at the end of Recreational Season. Each season is independent of the other and all squads are disbanded at the end of the Fall or Spring season.

All-Stars Eligibility

  • Gender and Age restrictions will be strictly adhered to. U10 players must be under the age of 10 by August 1st and U11 players must be under the age of 11 by August 1st of the respective year.
  • Players cannot be carded travel players.
  • Players are identified as good candidates for All-Stars by their Recreational Coaches
  • Potential All-Star candidates are evaluated during regular season games by a neutral third party, who will ultimately identify the roster for that season (Fall or Spring).

Once a roster is complete, a standing Recreational coach will be identified for each group and practices will begin at that coach’s discretion. This practice is specifically for preparation for an All Star tournament. Practices may coincide with the end of the Recreational season, but should not interfere with any player’s standing recreational practice. Practice usually spans for a period of two to three weeks and can be held several times each week up until tournament time. The Fall tournament is typically the 3rd weekend of November and the Spring tournament is typically the 3rd weekend in June (Father’s Day weekend).

Team jerseys are provided, but will remain the property of the association and will therefore be returned to a representative after each season. Players must provide their own black shorts and socks. All tournament fees and all expenses associated with the tournament (i.e. tournament registration fee, hotel stay, patches for tournament, misc., etc.) will be the responsibility of each player/family.

Fall 2007 All-Star Teams

The Harrisonburg Soccer Association Heat All-Star teams participated in the 7th Annual Herndon All-Star Cup tournament on November 17 & 18 in Herndon, Va. The tournament was held on various fields in and around Herndon. Our U11 teams competed against 13 other teams with our U10 competing against 14 and our GU10 competing against 21 other teams. The Heat All-Stars all played well with the GU11 making it to the semi-finals, both Boy's teams making it to the finals and finishing with a 2nd place trophy and the Girl's U10 team taking the 1st place trophy.  Congratulations to all Heat teams for making HSA proud!

********************************

The Girl's U10 Heat All-Star Team went undefeated and unscored upon for the entire tournament. On Saturday the Heat competed against Culpepper (1-0), Herndon (1-0), Prince William (1-0), and Fauquier (3-0). The Heat was the only undefeated team in the qualifying round, which seeded the Heat 1st out of 21 teams in the GU10 division going into the Championship Round on Sunday. After securing the #1 seed, the Heat received a bye for the quarterfinals and started on Sunday in the semi-finals against McLean 1, which the Heat won 3-0. The championship game against Prince William was a battle. It was 0-0 at half time and then the Heat scored relatively early in the second half. With 6 minutes left in the game, Prince William had a penalty kick opportunity to tie it up; however, the Heat’s goalie blocked the shot! With the ball still live, Prince William took a second shot; however, it went wide and the Heat held on to the 1-0 lead. In last few minutes of the game, the Heat scored again to win the championship game 2-0. Congratulations to all the girls for taking 1st place in their very first tournament together. You made us all very proud! Who Rocks the House? The HEAT Rocks the House!!!

The Boy's U-10 Heat All-Star Team were ranked 3rd in their bracket after the Saturday qualifying rounds. They faced Loudon Black on Sunday morning in the quarterfinals of the Championship round. The previous meeting between these two teams on Saturday morning had resulted in a tie. The two teams proved to be evenly matched once again on Sunday with the score deadlocked 0-0 at the end of regulation. By tournament rules, there were no overtime periods and the match went straight to Penalty Kicks. After the first five shots, the two teams were even at 3 goals a piece. The next round to break the tie was a sudden death penalty kick shootout. On the 2nd PK of this round, the Heat converted their shot and the goalie made a great save to secure a semi final birth against the 2nd ranked team from NVSC.

The Heat played their best game of the weekend in the semis with NVSC notching two goals in the first half. Their opponent’s lone goal came late in the 2nd half after the outcome had already been decided. With a 2-1 win, the Heat headed to the finals against the top ranked team from Braddock Road.

BRYC had earned a bye Sunday morning, so it was only their second game of the day, and the Heat’s third. Again the Heat played extremely well with the score knotted 0-0 at half. The Heat scored early in the 2nd half taking a 1-0 lead. However, mid-way through the 2nd half, BRYC tallied the equalizer. The Heat were running out of gas, but continued to play tough. Unfortunately, with about four minutes left in the match BRYC scored. Even down 2-1, the Heat created several last gasp opportunities, but could not find the back of the net. Congratulations to the U-10 boys for a 2nd place finish in their very first tournament.

The Girl's U11 All-Star Heat Team competed against Chantilly (1-1), Soccer on the Hill (2-1), Sterling Youth Soccer (3-0) and Springfield Youth Club (3-0) to finish and seed 3rd out of 13 teams in the qualifying round. The Heat moved on to the playoff round and met Southwestern Youth Association on Sunday morning and defeated the 6th seeded Cardinals 5-0. The Heat then went on to play Prince William Soccer, who had a bye for the first round making this Prince Williams first game of the day. Unfortunately, the Heat lost when the only score in the game came from a direct penalty kick on goal in the middle of the first half. Although the girls fought hard and dominated the rest of the game, a goal was not to be had. Congratulations to the Girls GU11 team for earning the 3rd seed, advancing to the semi-finals, playing hard and making HSA proud!

The Boy's U11 All-Star Heat Team played hard on Saturday winning three games and tying one (Herndon 1-0, SOTH 1-0, Vienna Red 3-0, and Vienna Blue 0-0). After the qualifying round, the Heat seeded 2nd in their division and received a bye for the first round of play on Sunday. The Heat began the championship round by playing Vienna Blue, the team they tied on Saturday. A nice cross in front of the goal box for a score was all that was needed to put the Heat in the championship game against PWSI. The PWSI team scored first, but the Heat came back to tie 1-1 at half. Late in the second half of the game, PWSI found the back of the net again to make it a 2-1 game, which was the final score. Congratulations to a team that played well together, played tough defense, came back in the championship game and came home with second place Championship trophies.

All-Stars - GU11 Extra

After winning the championship at the Father’s Day tournament in Fairfax, the Harrisonburg girls got an exciting invitation from DC United.  They were invited to go to RFK stadium with 10 other tournament champion teams to be involved in their “Night of Champions”.  The girls participated in the “high five” tunnel at the beginning of the game.  They were escorted down onto the field where they got to give the DC United and Dallas players high fives as their teams were introduced before the game.  A couple of the girls were quoted to have said, “We’re never going to wash our hands again.”  They also were allowed to have a team picture taken with the MLS Trophy Cup at the stadium.  A few pictures of the event follow:

In their first year of All-Star competition, the Girls U-10 team is two for two in championship titles. This past fall they won the Mega Blast Tournament in Richmond.

The girls played their first game Saturday morning. The early start did little to dampen their excitement as they defeated McLean Youth Soccer Club by a socre of 2-0. The Heat lived up to their name and scorched Southwestern Youth Soccer, the pre-tournament favorite, posting a 3-1 score. Having posted two wins on Saturday, the U-10 girls were in good position to qualify for the tournament finals.

On Sunday, the Heat faced Prince William Youth Soccer. With a win they would guarantee thempselve a spot in the finals. Once again, they were up to the task winning 3-0. In the championship game, they faced the only other undefeated team left in the tourney. It was a hard-fought battle, but the Heat posted a shutout win of 2-0 in the championship game against Ashburn Soccer Club. The Girls U-10 All-Sars had a perfect record for the second tournament in a row.

The Girls U-11 team repeated as champions, having won the FPYC tournament last year. The girls started their tournament play Saturday morning against Prince William Youth Soccer. The two teams were evenly matched for most of the game. Eventually, the Heat scored twice in the span of 5 minutes breaking open the tight game and added a third goal to seal the win with only a few minutes remaining in the match.

The afternoon game was against Arlington Soccer. Both teams battled through the extreme temperatures of the afternoon sun and a 0-0 tie was the end result. Sunday morning brought renewed energy, and a must-win situation to qualify for the finals. In the way was the team from Chantilly. The Heat’s stout defense and the intensity of the front line proved to be overwhelming as they swept the match 4-0.

The team earned the right to play for the championship Sunday afternoon. The opponent was once again Arlington, the same team they had battled Saturday afternoon. This time the tournament championship was on the line. The constant pressure by the Heat resulted in a handball in the penalty box of Arlington. The converted penalty kick provided the only score of the championship match with Harrisonburg winning 1-0. The Girls U-11 team had finiishined the tournament unbeaten and had not given up a goal in four shutout games.
