Soccer Fest 2009

The Spring 2009 SoccerFest is almost here –  Saturday, June 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Smithland Field. The day will consist of three round robin games for U10 and above teams and two round robin games for U5-U8. A day-long soccer family picnic and other sideline activities are planned.

Basic Game Guidelines

Over 160 games are scheduled throughout the day – see regular game schedule for June 6 (U5-U8 schedules still need to be tweaked). All games will run on the ½ hour with 25 minute games and no half-time. All teams will play 2-3 games. The schedule is tight and only allows for a 5 minute field switch time so teams must hit the field ready to play. Teams should warm up and stretch off to the side prior to their game time.

Thank you again goes to the WalMart Distribution Center for their generous donation in supporting our SoccerFest. Thanks to WalMart's support of Shenandoah Valley United, hotdogs/hotdog buns, water, sports drinks, paper plates and condiments (enough for 2,000) will be provided.

Thank you also to Aramark at JMU for providing ice for the day of our event!

Soccer Family Picnic

Each family per designated team/division will be asked to contribute to the SoccerFest picnic. (See list below for your age division assigned item.) A group picnic will be held along the fence between Field 2A and 2B with additional beverage tents at the other field locations. If you have picnic items that need to be kept cool, please plan to bring a cooler as well. Please put your names on any items (dishes, tables, tents, coolers, etc. brought to the field.)

  • U5 Coed - Desserts
  • U6 Coed - Fruit (slice fruit / fruit salads)
  • U7 Boys/Coed – Sports Drinks (1 case iced in cooler)
  • U8 Boys/Coed – Sports Drinks (1 case iced in cooler)
  • U8 Girls - Deserts
  • U10 Boys and Girls - Sides including greens salads, potato and pasta salads, veggies, etc.
  • U12 Boys and Girls - Sides including greens salads, potato and pasta salads, veggies, etc.
  • U14 - Chips and Dips

T & T Fun Zone Inflatables

With much enthusiasm, the Soccer Fest Committee and approximately 550 children (and their families) send a THANK YOU to the individuals, teams and companies that donated toward the Inflatables!

We reached our Inflatables goal today, thanks to Joe Bowman Auto Plaza for donating the remaining balance of what was needed.

This generous donation along with the donations by all are greatly appreciated!  Thanks once again to the many donors (listed on website) that helped support the Inflatables. We will have 3 Inflatables adjacent to Field 3 and 2 Inflatables between Field 1 and 2B. Each of these inflatables will be staffed by T & T Fun Zone.

Additional pledges or donations that come in this week will be used toward other Soccer Fest expenses or toward the Inflatables next year.

Thank you also to T & T Fun Zone for supplying the Inflatables and the staff that oversees their safe use.

For any questions, please contact Nancy Wayland, parent volunteer and "coordinator of weightlessness", at 478-4092 (cell).

Tents / Tables

It will be a hot day and tents will be needed to provide shade for the food items and for your team. Each team is encouraged to provide a table/tent for food items. Some teams are also planning to do their individual “team“ tents, complete with decorations and spirit. Please reply to Dana Boontarue is you can provide a tent or table boontadc@jmu.edu. (List of table/tent volunteers so far are listed below.)

Several teams are already planning to do a Team Tent complete with decorations. Team Tents can be set up on the perimeter but must not impair spectators coming and going to the games.

Spring 2009 Patches

We have a special Spring 2009 Rec Patch. This is a special patch as it was designed by a player on one of the U10 Girl’s team! Thanks to Ciara Hampton for the unique design and creativity!

T-shirts

Special Soccer Fest t-shirts with the Spring patch on the front and all names within your division printed on the back will be available for preorder. An order form will be distributed at the field and sent out via email. All orders must be preordered and prepaid. Order forms and payment can be dropped off at the Snack Shack. Orders will be distributed at Soccer Fest. Contact Rebecca Hampton (ciara1_99@yahoo.com) with any questions.

Parking

Expect an overflow of parking as it will be EXTREMELY tight; however, overflow parking is available at Smithland Elementary School. A shuttle from First Church of the Nazarene will be transporting people from Smithland Elementary School to Smithland Field (continously over and back). For safety reasons of our children, please park only in designated areas at Smithland Field. If you are coming after 8:30 a.m., you may want to save a trip to the field and park at the elementary school and wait for the shuttle. Please allow extra time for the commute.

Volunteers

Soccer Fest could not be done without many volunteers. Please look at the needs list below and let us know how you can help. Please contact Dana Boontarue (boontadc@jmu.eduto sign up for one of the many tasks. Please keep in mind that the Soccer Fest is like a big family picnic where everyone pitches in. Please help with set-up and clean-up as much as you can.

Old Uniforms

Old uniforms may not hold a lot of value for us, but they do for some people in Nimule and Mexico. If you have old uniforms that you no longer want to keep, please bring them to the Snack Shack at Soccer Fest. This past year the First Church of the Brethren carried uniforms with them on mission trips to both Mexico and Nimule and said the kids and adults were extremely excited to receive our uniforms. It’s actually kind of cool knowing that our uniforms are bringing joy to others throughout the world. If you would like to discard your uniform before leaving the field, then the church supporting these missions will wash them.

Parking

Expect an overflow of parking as it will be very tight.

  • U18s – use the second entrance to Smithland Field and park on the far side of the U18 field until area is full.
  • Overflow – there are a couple overflow areas, but not enough to accommodate everyone. We do have permission to park on Linda Lane or at the new elementary school. Team coaches/parents – good idea to coordinate a carpool for your team from the elementary school to the Field.

Soccer Fest 2007

The Spring 2007 Soccer Fest was a HUGE Success!!!

Thank you to the WalMart Distribution Center for their generous donation. Thanks to WalMart's support of our community, they kept the entire league supplied with water, Powerades, paper plates and condiments. Thanks also goes to Party Land located on Neff Avenue for supplying the balloons that decorated our tents. And to Eagle Carpet for supplying tents for each age division.

Wal-Mart®

Thank you also for our Age Group Coordinators who were a little nervous about trying to plan games and a picnic for 1,000+ players and families. In the end, it was our players and families that made the day fantastic! Thanks to those who helped in any way and to those who participated. With everyone's contributions, hopefully we have started a tradition that will grow each year. . .
