Phase 2 Update - Recreation Return to Play

Phase 2 Update - Recreation Return to Play

SVU Families:

Thanks for your continued support of SVU.  We have heard from so many confirming their interest in returning to play, while hearing also many positive comments from others who are not yet ready to get back to the field.

Governor Northam
Many, if not all of you, have seen the Virginia Forward Phase 2 Guidelines released yesterday.  Based on the "Recreational Sports" section, actual competitive soccer matches seem unlikely while in Phase 2.  However, we understand that Governor Northam plans to address Youth Sports specifically on Thursday.  We'd like to hear what he might add to clarify the guidelines.  We are also awaiting interpretation from the Virginia Youth Soccer Association (VYSA), the governing body for the game of soccer in the state.

Teams/Rosters & Schedules
Sorry to keep everyone waiting for Rosters and Practice Schedules.  We continue to have significant number of registration cancellations forcing us to continue to make roster adjustments to the teams daily.  We still have a robust league in terms of number of teams (6 teams Coed u5u6, 10 teams Coed u7u8, 3 teams Girls u7u8, 8 teams Coed u9u10, 4 teams Girls u9u10, 6 teams Coed u11u12, 3 team Girls u11u12, 3 teams Coed u13u14). We'll make every effort to finalize and publish the roster allocations by Friday.

Possible Changes to the Program - Practice
Unless we hear something new from the Governor or VYSA, during such time that we remain in Phase 2, we are likely to move forward with a program that focuses on Technical Skill Development in a fun and safe environment, over Game Play.  This means more Ball Skills/Ball Mastery activities, more Passing/Receiving activities, more Possession activities, more Shooting/Crossing/Finishing activities, and other activities in which physical distance can be maintained while still learning and having fun.

Possible Changes to the Program - Matches
Again, unless we hear something new from the Governor or VYSA, while we remain in Phase 2, we are likely to move to a Saturday format based on fun competitive skills activities, where teams square off against each other in, for example, 2-Team Shooting Contest, Penalty Kick Competitions, "Power & Finesse" competitions, Soccer Tennis Tournaments, etc.  We realize this is a steep departure from Sat League Match Play.  Still, we hope you will embrace the need to be safe and compliant during this time and still have a fun, soccer-based experience while we remain in Phase 2.

Look for regular program updates over the coming days and weeks.

Sincerely, SVU Staff
