Multiple Teams Successful in Memorial Day Tournament



Congratulations to all the SVU teams who competed in the Cannon Cup Memorial Day Tournament in Manassas! 

The SVU staff is pleased to announce the successful performance of multiple teams during the end of the season tournament. Each team showed progression and improvements from the beginning of the season and competed against clubs from locations throughout the state of Virginia.

SVU had multiple teams advance to the semi-finals and finals of their division. Congratulations!!!

COE Boys u9 – Coaches Dlovan Hassan, Edgar Arenas and Tom Mitch led the u9 boys throughout the tournament. The u9 team qualified for the semi-final match as the 2nd seed with 1 win and 1 loss in their group. They won and impressive semi-final match 6-0 and advanced to the finals where they lost to CYA 2-0, in a rematch from group play, and were awarded runner up of the Boys u9 Bull Run Division.

COE Boys u10 – Coaches David Shenk and Jason Fink were in charge of the u10 boys over the weekend. The u10 team competed in a round robin Division playing against each team in the group for a total of four matches. The team was named the overall Champions of the group with 3 wins and 1 draw. Congratulations!

COE Boys u11 White – Led by head coach Mason Duke and assistant coach Edgar Arenas, the u11boys team also competed in a round robin division playing against each team in the group. The team earned 2nd place with 1 win and 2 losses scoring 5 goals.

COE Boys u12 White – Assistant Coach Anthony Tongen and SVU Technical Director Tom Mitch coached the u12 boys team as they qualified for the semi-final match earning the 2nd seed with 1 win and 1 draw in their group play. They advanced to the finals with a strong showing in their semi-final victory 4-0. The Championship Match was a rematch from a 0-0 draw in group play against VSA. The Final was just as close as the group match. After a rain delay, the teams completed regulation play tied 2-2. With no goals scored in both overtime periods, the teams were forced to compete in penalty kicks. The u12 White team were named Champions of the Bull Run Division after successfully winning the dramatic shootout! Congratulations for staying focused and overcoming the challenge!

Comp Boys u13 Blue – Led by head coach Mason Duke, SVU’s Competitive Boys u13 team won their bracket in the 2nd division of the tournament and qualified for the semi final match with 1 win and 1 draw. They won the semi final match over Winchester United in a tightly contested match, 3-2. In the final match, the team faced a familiar opponent in skyline league team SOCA Charlottesville Premier. The Championship match was ended early due to severe storms and they were unable to finish. As a result, the team was named Co-Champions of the Cavalry Division.


Comp Girls u14 Blue – Head coach Trevor Nichols directed the Competitive Girls u14 team as they qualified for the semi-final match in the 2nd 
division of the tournament with 1 win and 1 draw in group play. They advanced to the final after winning 4-2 in the semis against PWSI Courage. Unfortunately, the u14 girls were also unable to complete the Championship match against WBSC Strikers due to severe storms. The team was named Co-Champions after a weather delay and eventually the game was concluded as a tie when their field was officially closed.

Comp Boys u14 Blue – Assistant coach Sean Polson covered the coaching responsibilities with the help of Tom Mitch and Trevor Nichols. The u14 team won their group in the tournament's 2nd division and qualified for the semi final match with 2 impressive wins, 4-1 and 3-0. They advanced to the championship match in another strong victory defeating Premier AC 5-2. In the final match, the team faced SOCA Charlottesville Premier and fell short with their only loss of the tournament. The team was awarded runner up in the Cavalry Division.
