Recreation FAQ's

Q: What are the program goals:Encourage the growth of recreation soccer together

Provide a competitive cost, safe and structured soccer experience for all area youth ages 3-18
Programs are conveniently located throughout Rockingham County 

Q: How do I register my child to play soccer with Shenandoah Valley United? 

A: During open registration periods, you may register online through the SVU website by entering and selecting the registration link. This will bring up the registration form to be completed online. Shenandoah Valley United is striving for maximum on-line registration. However, if you do not have access to a computer you may register by filling out a paper registration form and dropping it off at the Club Office or mailing it with a check or money order, to the Club Office. Payment must be made at the time of registration in order for the registration to be processed.

Q: Where is the SVU recreation program offered?

A: There are four main location hubs for the SVU recreation program. 
Central: Smithland Soccer Complex
North: John C Myers Elementary School
South: Oakdale Park *may change
East: Montevideo Middle

Q: How do I make payment online?

Online Registration is available to everyone who desires to pay by credit card or electronic check. Step by step directions are given on the form for completing the payment. The payment is made through a secure line to a card service, which clears your check or credit card for payment. Q. What is included in the price?

A. Virginia Youth soccer Association registration, Insurance, Fields Maintenance, Website and Administration, Referees and SVU recreation staff.

Q. What does the uniform include?

A. The uniform includes: 2 Soccer Specific Jersey (Home and Away), 1 pair of shorts and 1 pair of socks. Uniform only needs to be purchased once during the uniform cycle. The Cycle for the newest uniform kit would be from Fall 2016- Spring 2020. If any kits were purchased prior to the Fall 2016 Season, a new kit is required. 

Q. Which uniform jersey is home, and which is away?

A: The team listed on the match schedule as the "home team" will wear White jerseys.  
    The team listed as the "away team" will wear the Navy jerseys.

Q: Where is the club office?

A: The SVU office address is 54 East Market Street, Harrisonburg, VA 22801. It is located in downtown Harrisonburg, one block off of court square.

Q: What are the SVU office hours of operation? 

A: The SVU office is open:
Monday to Thursday -  9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m

Changes to these hours will be posted on the website.

Q: What is your refund policy?

A: Families may request a refund for registration fees if the player is unable to participate in the recreation season/camp/clinic. In order to have your request reviewed and considered, families must make a written request for the refund and explain why the participant will not be able to play. Not all refund requests will be awarded the same amount and not all requests are guaranteed to be given a refund.

If the request is made BEFORE the registration deadline has occurred, families will be charged a $5 administration fee for each registration and receive the remaining amount of each full registration. If the request is made AFTER the registration deadline has occurred, families will be charged a $5 administration fee for each registration and additional charges may be applied based on the length of time the participant has played during the season. Refunds will not be considered after the first three weeks of the season have passed.

Q: Does my child have to tryout to be part of the SVU recreation program?

A: No there are no tryouts, anybody can play!

Q: What does "U" (as in U6) mean? 

A: "U" stands for Under. Players are placed by their age as of August 1st. So U6 means that the player is Under 6 (or 5 years old) as of August 1st of that year. 

Q: How do I find out about my child's placement?

A: Once teams have been announced you will be able to log on using your user name and password and see what team your child has been placed on. Your child's coach will also contact you to introduce themselves and let you know about the team's practice schedule. 

Q. When are recreation games and practices?

A. The season consists of one practice and one game per week. Practices are held during the week from Monday-Thursday at designated field locations, which can be found in the chart above.  All games are played on Saturdays at the designated field locations from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm.

*SVU strives to provide seven games per season, weather permitting, but guarantee at least six games per season. 

Q. How are my children supervised during practices?

A. Coaches are responsible for all players at all times during practices and games, but we ask that each parent stays during practice, or communicates to Coach to let them know of parent absence. No child will be left without adult supervision. All coaches are subject to a KidSafe background check prior to working within any of our programs.

Q. What type of instruction is given to players?

A. Practice activities are age-appropriate. Players are taught soccer skills and tactics appropriate for their age/skill level, according to the SVU Coaching Curriculum. Emphasis is placed on players enjoying a fun experience.

Q. What if it rains on game days or practice days?

A. Shenandoah Valley United DO NOT own any of the fields that we currently use. Rockingham County Parks and Recreation department and the Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation determines field conditions and will advise us on their use. Please check the home page of our website for all field status. An email will also be sent to all accounts as soon as we are notified of any field cancellations. If the parks authority or SVU officials close the fields, no one may play soccer on them at all. 

Q: What equipment is needed for each player?

A: Each player should come to practice and games prepared to play.

Shin guards are mandatory for all players.
Soccer cleats are not required for U6 age groups and below, but are highly recommended.

They should also bring:
 a ball
 a water bottle
 dress for the weather- for practice, it is not required to have the uniform on, but they need to be dress appropriately.  

Every player will be given a uniform that includes two jerseys, shorts, and a pair of socks.

Q: What size of soccer ball should I purchase for my player?

      Ball Size #3: U5/U6 and U7/U8
      Ball Size #4: U9/U10, U11/U12
      Ball Size #5: U13+
