Recreation Programs Offered

Recreation programs are offered each fall and spring.  To find out which programs a player is eligible for, view the Recreation Age Chart.  Reference the program specific page and FAQs for more details.

Mini Kickers (U4 / U5):
A fun introduction to soccer activities for the little ones.  This once-a-week, 45-minute session is a 6-week program.  Sessions are run by SVU Staff with parent involvement and offers a unique experience to U4 and U5 players to learn basic soccer skills and promote an active lifestyle.

U5 players have the option to participate in Mini Kickers or Recreation Teams.

Recreation (U5 to U19):
The Recreation program provides the opportunity for boys and girls to develop basic soccer skills and teamwork in a stress-free and fun environment.  SVU is a long-time advocate of small-sided games, which promote player development in the younger age groups.

The Recreation program season consists of one (1) 60-minute practice session during the week and one (1) game on Saturday over eight (8) weeks each in both the Fall and the Spring.  Practices are held in the city and each of the high school district areas of the county.  Players have the choice to be on a team in any high school district as it does not need to be the same area of residence.  All games are played on at Smithland Soccer Complex in Harrisonburg.

The Recreation program is coordinated by SVU staff, but relies heavily on volunteers to keep costs down for all.  Volunteers are needed to oversee age divisions and prepare schedules (Age Group Coordinators), coach (head and asst), team manager and other game day roles (Snack Shack, equipment manager, Soccer Fest committee, etc). As you register your child, please consider a role that would be right for you.

U5 players have the option to participate in Mini Kickers or Recreation.

Challenge (U7 to U10):
The Challenge program is designed for players who are Advanced and/or have potential future interest in Travel Soccer. Challenge is more structured and instructional than the regular Recreation program. With no tryouts, parents / players are free to determine whether Challenge is right for them based on player athleticism, soccer experience, and potential interest in travel soccer. Training sessions are once during the week ran by SVU Staff and Volunteer/Parent coaches.
