SVU Competitive Teams: Representing Harrisonburg & Rockingham in Elite Soccer

Shenandoah Valley United (SVU) Competitive teams offer a high level of soccer experience for dedicated players in the U11 through U19 age groups. Our teams represent the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County communities within their league, competing in local, regional, and national tournaments and invitational events.

About SVU Competitive Teams

SVU Competitive teams are designed for players with previous soccer experience who are ready to take their skills to the next level. Our teams are part of the Virginia Premier Soccer League (VPSL) and compete in the NPL – West Division, ensuring top-tier competition and growth opportunities for every player.

  • Age Groups: U11 – U19 for both Boys and Girls.
  • League: Virginia Premier Soccer League (VPSL) – NPL-West Division.
  • Seasons: Fall & Spring, with competitive play in both league games and tournaments.

  • Fall 2024 Details

    Club Structure:
    As SVU continues grow, we’ll offer more than one team at an age group. Navy and Green. Those teams will be tiered with the Navy team competing in the NPL West and the Green teams often competing in the NPL Classic Division.

    IMPORTANT DATES:
    Practice Begins:
    Week of August 12th, 2024. Each travel team will have two or three (2-3) x 1.5 hour training session per week. Players will have the option to attend a 3rd training session (technical/functional).

    Potential League Match Dates: August 17-18, August 17-18, September 7-8, September 14-15, September 21-22, September 28-27, October 5-6, October 12-13, October 19-20, October 26-27, November 2-3. Post Season tournament- Mid November.

    Tournament Dates: August 31-September 1 (Labor Day Weekend) & Post Season (November Dates TBD) Spring Dates- end of February (Dates TBD), Memorial Day weekend.

    $ 1025 -2024-2025 U11-U14 Teams – Fall & Spring
    $725 for 2024-2025 U15-U19 Teams – Fall Only

    IMPORTANT DATES:
    Practice Begins:
    Feb. 17 2025 . Each travel team will have two  (2) Team sessions x 1.5 hour training session per week. Players will have the option to attend a 3rd training session (Pool training session, combined age groups)

    Spring season is for U11- U14 only.

    Potential League Match Dates: NPL Matches kick off the weekend of March 1st.

    Tournament Dates:  For Spring 2025 – Stafford St. Patrick’s Day. March 8 / 9 – U13 /u14
    March 15 / 16  – U11- u12.
    Memorial Day- May 24 /25  – Williamsburg Va

  • Travel League - VPSL - Western Division
    • Teams compete in VPSL National Premier League – Western Division.
    • Opponent clubs are from West Central and Southwestern Virginia, including areas such as Roanoke, Lynchburg, Augusta County, Orange County and Charlottesville.
    • NPL league play consists of 8 to 10 matches per season, champion teams may qualify for post season play to participate in NPL national competitions.
    • U11-14 teams participate in 4 tournaments per year.
    • U15-19 teams compete solely in the fall season to avoid High School play conflicts.  Teams compete in 2 tournaments during the fall season.
    • All teams participate in the local Blue Ridge Cup based in Charlottesville area on Labor Day Weekend.  Blue Ridge Cup

    SVU Travel Uniforms: Order Directly from Capelli Sports

    All players on SVU travel teams are required to order their official uniforms through Capelli Sports, the exclusive provider for SVU. The link to order uniforms will be provided by the SVU staff.

    Mandatory Uniform Pieces
    To participate in travel soccer, there are specific mandatory uniform items that each player must purchase. These essential pieces will ensure that your player is ready to compete at the highest level, with the proper gear for games and events.

    In addition to the mandatory uniform items, players will also have the opportunity to purchase additional gear such as:

    SVU Financial Aid Program: Supporting Families in Need

    The SVU Financial Aid Program is designed to ensure that all families have the opportunity to participate in SVU soccer programs without facing financial hardship. Financial aid is available for families who qualify, based on demonstrated need and the funds available each season.

    Eligibility and Application Process

    Financial aid is available in the Fall and Spring for players in the Recreation, Challenge, and Travel programs. To apply for financial aid, families must complete the Financial Aid Form. All applications will be reviewed confidentially by SVU staff.

    Important Information:

    • Annual Application: Financial aid requests must be submitted each tax year (April 15 – April 15) with current and complete information.
    • Program-Specific Aid: Each financial aid request must be approved for the specific program you are applying for, and aid is subject to available funding.
    • Approval: Financial aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, depending on need and the funds available for the season.
    • Confidential: All financial aid requests will be kept confidential by SVU staff.

    How to Apply:

    To apply for financial aid, please complete the Financial Aid Form and submit it to SVU by one of the following methods:

    Financial Aid Coverage

    • Participation in public assistance programs (such as Medicaid or the Free/Reduced Lunch Program).
    • Income documentation (based on established limits).
    • Available funds for the season.

    Please Note:

    • Aid approved for one program will only apply to that program. If you wish to apply for aid for additional programs (such as camps, clinics, or extra training), a new written request must be submitted. You do not need to submit a new application within the same tax year.

  • 2024-25 TEAM TRYOUTS

    TRYOUT FACTS:

    Players are expected to pre-register for Annual player placements via their online SVU account. Please contact svuinfo@shenvalleysoccer.com if you require registration assistance.

    SVU annual player placements are conducted each spring (April and May) for the following fall and spring Travel and Challenge seasons.

    SVU Annual player placements are open to any interested player of the appropriate age and gender. Performance, attendance and attitude from previous soccer seasons will be considered.

    Follow the link below for the Annual SVU player placement Schedule.    All players are strongly encouraged to attend both tryouts, if possible!  To be considered for placement on a team all candidates must attend at least one tryout. 

    Team Formation
    It will be our goal to form teams by Birth Year – Please only register/attend the tryout for the year in which you were born – unless otherwise directed by the SVU Technical Staff. Click Here to see which year team you are eligible for.

    “How to register” for tryouts:
    Create a SVU Account using the link on the top right corner of the website. Add your player profiles. You will see a list of available programs for each player. Click the appropriate tryout for which you are looking to register for. If there is none available, you may not be eligible for the program or it is currently unavailable.

  • COACHING EMPLOYMENT

    Interested in coaching with SVU?
    We are always looking for committed and energetic people with a soccer background to join our coaching ranks.

    We have paid coaching positions at the U10 Challenge level as well as our u11- U19 travel program.

    The Challenge program trains twice a week and plays matches on the weekends, typically on Saturdays.

    The Competitive program trains two to three times a week with matches on the weekends, involves some travel within the region for league play as well as tournaments.

  • TEAM COMMITMENT
    • Travel teams are selected in the late spring and begin training in late summer (August). Players commit to participate for the full length of the program.
    • U15 and older teams participate predominantly in the fall season to avoid conflicts with high school soccer programs.  SVU High School age groups may have tournaments in early spring for college recruiting purposes
    • U11 through U14 teams will have full fall and spring seasons. Fall seasons typically are August to November. Spring seasons taking place February through May.
    • There are no refunds after the registration deadline in June. Players commit to participating for the full year at the time of registration. Exceptions are only made for medical reasons or family relocation.
  • TRAINING SESSIONS

    SVU – High school ages teams.

    • Teams train 3 days a week
    • Pool training opportunities are a formal part of the curriculum and is implemented throughout the season.

    U11-14 Teams

    • Teams will train 2 days a week with their team
    • Weekly pool training sessions will be offered for 6-8 weeks throughout the season. These sessions are in addition to the team sessions. These sessions are not mandatory but highly encouraged. These pool sessions are free.

    Training sessions take place at a variety of locations in Rockingham County. For example, Horizons Edge, Rockingham Park, Ramblewood Park, Monger Park, Smithland Park.
